What is Agent Banking?
This is a legal entity that is mandated by Goldmac Comfort House Ltd. and approved by Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)to contract agents of the institution on behalf of the institution in the manner specified under the CBK guidlines.
This is whereby third parties that have been vetted and approved under thhe CBK regulations are contracted by the institution to provide financial services on behalf of the institution under specific conditions and regulations.
Introduction
A National Financial Access Survey that was carried out in 2009 showed that 32% of Kenya's bankable population was totally outside the orbit of financial services while many more were being served by the informal financial system. In support of vision 2030, Kenya's finacial sector is expected to explore and implement innovative models that will deepen it's support to the coutry's savings and investment growth,
The Finance Act 2009 that became operational in January 2010 amended the Banking Act to enable the use of third party agents by financial institutions. On the 14th January 2010, Prof. Ndungu the CBK Governor presided over a workshop where the new banking model was not only demystified, but where success stories of agent banking were showcased and a consensus among Market players was created around agent banking.
